I’m curious. Toyota hasn’t built a fun to drive FWD car in a very long time. The normal Yaris is far less fun than many of it’s equally not-hot competitors. Adding HP won’t nearly be enough.

Did they move this to GA-B, while making it look like a facelift of the old Yaris, or something?

Also, I don’t see anything about a turbo in that article... I’m gonna laugh if they do something off-the-wall like put the 2.5 Dynamic Force engine and the Camry Hybrid’s gearbox in it. (Actually, tbh, a higher-compression version of the non-hybrid 2.5 Dynamic Force would probably be enough to get the 9 horsepower needed to get “over 210", and that’d be an interesting approach to a hot hatch.)

The Yaris and Mazda2 share a chassis, and the Mazda2 is supposed to be a properly fun little hatch with a few modifications/race prep. I actually have pretty high hopes for this car.

I really hope this makes it to the U.S.

With a Mazda2 chassis, which is apparently great fun with a bit of prep for both autox and road racing, some tweaked suspension, and a peppy little motor (I’m assuming small displacement turbo, or possibly larger displacement NA) it could be pretty damn great.

Considering the success of the FiST in the U.S., Toyota’s recent trend of saying they want to move toward having more sporty models (and somewhat backing that up), a desire to capitalize off of their WRC efforts, and the partnership potential with Mazda (think chassis AND engines) this could be a very good thing.

They do? I might be mistaken here, but I believe you’re wrong. The Mazda2 and the Ford Fiesta share a chassis. The Toyota Yaris uses an entirely different one as far as I know.

You might be confusing the normal Yaris with the weird looking Mazda 2 sedan they rebadged as a Scion or Yaris sedan in some markets (North America?). That obviously does have the Mazda 2 chassis, but it’s not related to the 200 hp Yaris in the article above as far as I know.

Displayed alongside with the new Yaris WRC that will debut at Monte Carlo Rally on January 19th, this new sports version illustrate the dynamism of the Yaris line-up.

Based on a 3 door body type and equipped with a powerful engine of more than 210 DIN hp, this new Yaris high performance derivative is making the link between the Yaris WRC rally and the Yaris model line-up.

At the same time, the entire Yaris line-up will benefit from the similar design modifications, with a new front face, a new rear style and a modernised interior.

On top of those aesthetical considerations, many technical modifications have been applied in order to improve the overall comfort and handling of the car.

This will refresh the entire Yaris line-up and make the Yaris Hybrid version even stronger. Yaris Hybrid is still a unique offer in the B-Segment and accounts for more than 40% of all Yaris sales in Europe.
